the second to last game of district play. McKinney
softball hit a few milestones with the win tonight. It is the first time in
thirteen years we have totaled 23 wins on the season. An even bigger milestone
is with the win we also locked up at least third place in district and made the

Guajardo moved to third on a sac bunt by Haley Pruitt and scored on a pass
ball. MHS added another run in the third after Chelsey Rephan reached first on
a walk. Rephan then stole second and was brought home by a blooping double by

McKinney hosted Frisco Centennial Saturday in
hopes to take back a first half loss and stay in the hunt for a district
championship. Things looked good in the first when Ashley Thomas led off the
first with a single. Thomas then stole second but that was as far as she got
when the next three batters were unable to move her. McKinney was held off balance the rest of the
night by Centennial pitcher Shelby McCoy. Centennial was able to score all 3
runs in the third inning by bunting and catching McKinney with their guard down. The Lionettes
attempted a two out rally in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little
too late. Even with the loss McKinney
is all but assured a playoff spot.

Thursday night and added another win to their district record. Both teams
appeared to be tense through the first three innings until the Lionettes settled
down and got on board first in the fourth. Alyssa Fontillas started it off when
she reached first on an error by the third baseman. Fontillas was moved over by
a Gina Guajardo single, followed by a Jenny Guzman walk to load the bases. Next up was
Ashley Thomas who lasered a line drive
to right center scoring all three runs. McKinney, not satisfied, stayed hot in the fifth when Lisa Licata and Meredith Baker
reached on singles which forced North to change pitchers. Unphased, the Lionettes
poured it on after Kelsi McCarthy walked to load the bases and Gina Guajardo
singled to bring in two more runs. McCarthy scored on an errant throw to first

McKinney downs Plano West 4-1
March
3, 2009
McKinney
hosted Plano West Tuesday night in
the last home non-district game. Playing against a perennial powerhouse
team the Lionettes brought out their "A" game. The game was a pitchers
duel gong into the 5th inning where both teams were
scoreless. Plano West got on the board first, in the top of the 5th,
off a well executed squeeze play. Just as in most games this season the
Lionettes answered the next at bat with 4 runs of their own, started
off by a Chelsey Rephan 2 run single. The scoring continued in the 5th
with 2 runners on when Meredith Baker singled to right center and then
a Melissa Gurley single off the center field wall.

McKinney Continues to Perform with a 9-1 Win over Boyd
Feb 25, 2009
McKinney hosted their
crosstown rivals Boyd last night in the first Gold Rush game of the
season.
Coming off a successful showing at the BCS Tournament the Lionettes
continued
that pattern last night beating the Broncos 9-1. The game started well
for MHS with lead off singles by Ashley Thomas and Jenny Gilbert.
Lisa Licata reached on an error while sacrifice bunting. With
bases loaded Thomas and Gilbert were
brought in by a Meredith Baker 2 RBI single and Licata scored when
Haley Pruitt
reached base on an error. Boyd got a run in the 4th but McKinney answered with
one of their own when Gilbert got on base with a single. Gilbert scored when Baker
doubled to right center. Boyd never threatened to score from that point on but McKinney kept bringing
the hits when 3 more runs crossed in the 5th
after Pruitt and
Melissa Gurley each got on the base paths. Pruitt scored from a
Thomas single to left center. Gurley and Thomas scored when Jenny
Gilbert
singled to right center. The night was capped off after Alyssa

In
the sixth and final game at the Bryan-College Station Tournament the Lionettes took
on Tomball, the 3rd ranked 5A team according to the latest Texas Girls
Coaches Association poll. McKinney
jumped to an early lead that was led off by Ashley Thomas getting a single. She was
then moved over with a Jenny Gilbert single. Both advanced another base by a
Lisa Licata sac bunt. Thomas then scored by a Meredith Baker RBI ground out.
Tomball tied the game in the third and the game stayed tied until the top of
the fifth. The Lionettes kept putting the ball in play all game and pressuring
Tomball who eventually made a few mistakes. McKinney
capitalized on the errors with 3 runs. Jenny
Guzman reached first on an error by second base and then reached third
after
Melissa Gurley reached first on would be sac bunt. The third baseman
sent the ball sailing over first base, allowing Gurley to reach safely.
Ashley Thomas singles between short and
third scoring Guzman and Gurley advanced to third. Gurley then scored
on a
Jenny Gilbert RBI ground out. Thomas was next to score the third run of
the
inning when Lisa Licata reached first as first base couldn’t dig out a
throw from third. Leanne Shine had an errorless game, and a huge
back up from the
outfield who made some big time catches in a difficult wind. The
Lionettes were able to carry
the three run lead to the win. McKinney, the only 4A team out of the 5A field of teams, came away with 5th
place overall out of 40 teams.
Winning
pitcher was Leanne Shine who pitched 7 innings giving up 1 run (1 earned), 6
hits, 2 strike outs, and 2 walks.
Game 5 - McKinney beats Coppell 1-0
In
the fifth game at the Bryan-College Station Tournament the Lionettes after an
hour and half rain delay were once again paired against a fellow metroplex team
in Coppell. The game would go down as a pitcher’s dual as both sides seemed to
trade out for out through the 5th inning. In the bottom of the fifth
Haley Pruitt hit a groundball single up the middle. Pruitt went on to steal
second and immediately reached third after an errant throw by the Coppell
catcher. With Pruitt on third Gina Guajardo reached first base after a walk,
catching the Cowboys with their guard down, Guajardo continued running to second and was
caught in a pickle allowing Pruitt to score the only run of the game. Guajardo
made it back to first safely but the remaining batters were not able to get her
across the plate. The one run was enough
for Jenny Gilbert and the
defense as McKinney
earned another victory and a 5th place game against Tomball. Winning
pitcher was Jenny Gilbert who pitched 7 innings giving up 0 runs (0 earned), 1
hits, 6 strike outs, and 1 walk.

Ashley Thomas reached on an error. Round Rock scored in the fourth as did the
Lionettes when Meredith Baker scored on a Gina Guajardo RBI ground out. McKinney and the Warriors
stayed scoreless the next three innings leading to ITB. McKinney was able to
squash a would be threat when Gina Guajardo caught a line drive then threw to
first for a force out to end the inning. McKinney
was able to take advantage of their opportunity after Ashley Thomas advanced to
third from a Jenny Gilbert single and then scored when Meredith Baker hit a
hard shot to short stop to win the game.

Feb 19, 2009 - Day 1 of BCS Tournament
Game 2 - First Bracket Game vs Alvin:
In the second
game McKinney was paired against the 2008 5A State Champion Alvin Yellow Jackets. McKinney decided to come
out and play a little more aggressively and it worked out for a 5-2 victory
after 6 innings. Jenny Gilbert set the tone by starting the game facing the
first four batters; striking out the first two looking and got the fourth to
fly out to center. When McKinney came up to bat in the bottom of the first the first four in the line up (Ashley
Thomas, Jenny Gilbert, Lisa Licata, and Meredith Baker) all singled and
scored. This lead the Alvin coach to change the starting pitcher in
the middle of the first. Alvin
was able to score a run in the third and then again in the 5th. McKinney answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the 5th after Gina
Guajardo singled to lead off the inning. Guajardo moved to third by an Alyssa
Fontillas single and then scored after tagging up off of a Jenny Gilbert RBI
fly out to center. Gilbert was able to
shut down the Yellow Jackets in the 6th. McKinney was on the verge of scoring again in
the bottom half of the 6th when time ran out.
Winning
pitcher was Jenny Gilbert who pitched 6 innings giving up 2 runs (2 earned), 4
hits, 5 strike outs, and 3 walks.
Game 1 - Play In Game vs Temple:
In
the first game at the Bryan-College Station Tournament, the Lionettes struggled
early and often against Temple
but were able to overcome their mistakes to outlast the Cats. After leading off
with a single and then scoring off a Meredith Baker fielders choice was Ashley
Thomas. Temple then came back with a run in the
first and a run in the second but McKinney answered in the third when Jenny Gilbert scored off a Lisa Licata RBI single. McKinney then scored two
more runs in the 4th after Jenny Guzman led off with a double. She was pushed home off a Haley Pruitt single
who then scored after a passed ball. Temple
was able to score two more runs in the top of the 5th inning. Yet again the Lionettes were able to find a
way to answer with a run of their own in the 5th inning when Ashley
Thomas was hit by a pitch and moved to third by a Jenny Gilbert single. Thomas was moved home by a Lisa Licata RBI
fly out. The Lionettes scored one more run in the bottom of the 6th. Chelsey Rephan walked and was moved over by a
Alyssa Fontillas single when Gina Guajardo lined a shot straight back to the

with a 6-4 victory. McKinney next plays last
years 5A State Champions from Alvin.
